Cosmo, Glamour, Allure, Vogue, these are all magazines women deem as their bibles. Everyday, the pages of the magazines are flipped through, drooled on, and dog-eared with the hopes of one day looking like the models in these magazines. Everything is about what's in and what's not. Personally, if I walked down my street in a potato sack, the next outfit I would wear would be a straight jacket. But, have Alessandra Ambrosio walk the runway in the same sack, she is labeled a "style icon," a woman EVERY woman wants to be. An idol. It's the name she wears. She is known for her job. Sure she is beautiful, but I have met alot of beautiful women who demean themselves because they think they "can't compare to a supermodel." Everything is about sex-appeal in today's society. Women try so hard to be something they aren't that it leads to dangerous repercussions. I am certainly no supermodel, that I can accept. Would I like to be one? Of course! Who wouldn't!? I admit, I do flip through the same pages thinking "wow, she is gorgeous. I wish I looked like her." Fact is, not every woman is 5'10" and 105 lbs. That's just what the image of women is. Young women are getting boob jobs, tummy tucks, nose jobs, botox, ect. to try to be like these women in magazines. Surgery of any kind is dangerous. We have all seen the editorial in the gossip magazines about a tummy tuck gone wrong or a lop-sided silicone boob. The worst part is the younger generation. The pre-teen girls who are picked on and teased at school because they are slightly larger than other girls their age. That kind of teasing can lead to them harming themselves or other people. In today's society, women and young girls, are all made to think they have to be perfect to be beautiful. Maybe soon we will all see 5'3 160 lb girls walking the runway, even if it is in a potato sack.
I do love reading beauty magazines but I think you have just got to not take them to heart, if thats the right way of putting it! Its like that line in savage gardens affirmation song 'I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem' Sometimes I think they can, even though I buy them all the time :) great post X
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I buy them all the time too. But, even I sometimes desire to be one of them. I guess it's just all about feeling comfortable and being happy in your own skin.. =)
